Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has officially assumed duty as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, succeeding Kayode Egbetokun (Rtd), who served as the 22nd indigenous Inspector-General of Police from June 19, 2023, to February 24, 2026.
Disu, born on April 13, 1966, hails from the Lagos Island Local Government Area of Lagos State. He joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on May 18, 1992, and brings decades of operational, investigative, intelligence, and administrative experience to the position.
Before his appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. Over the years, he has held several strategic positions across the country, including Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit at Force Headquarters, Abuja; Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State Commands; and Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration and Intelligence at the Force Intelligence Bureau.
He also served as Deputy Commissioner of Police and Head of the Intelligence Response Team, Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, and Assistant Commissioner of Police at the Criminal Investigation Department in Rivers State. Other roles include Officer in Charge of Anti-Kidnapping operations in Rivers State, Officer in Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Ondo and Oyo states between 2011 and 2014, and Divisional Police Officer in Ondo State.
His earlier assignments include Officer in Charge of Training at the Nigeria Police Peacekeeping Department, Directing Staff at the Nigerian Police Academy in Kano, Aide-de-Camp to a former Governor of Lagos State, and Officer in Charge of Anti-Fraud at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Katsina between 1993 and 1998.
The Acting Inspector-General holds several academic qualifications, including a Master’s degree in Entrepreneurship from the National Open University of Nigeria (2023), a Master’s degree in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology from Lagos State University (2022), and an Advanced Diploma in Forensic Investigation and Criminal Intelligence from the University of Lagos (2019). He also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University (2010), a Postgraduate Diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies from Lagos State University (2000), and a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University (1990).
Disu is a member of several professional bodies, including the International Academy of Forensics, the National Association of Investigative Specialists in the United States, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
He previously led the first Nigerian Police contingent to the African Union Mission in Sudan in 2005, where officers were deployed to support peacekeeping operations in Darfur.
Beyond policing, Disu has a strong background in sports and martial arts. He is a former National Chairman of the Nigeria Police Judo Association and holds a third-degree black belt in judo. He also won a silver medal at the 2022 US Open Judo Championships.
The Nigeria Police Force expressed appreciation to the immediate past Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his contributions to the growth, modernisation and strengthening of the Force during his tenure.
In his remarks, Disu reassured officers and men of the Force, stakeholders and the general public of his commitment to building on existing reforms, improving internal security, strengthening community partnerships and enhancing the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force to protect lives and property in line with global best practices.
The Force also called for continued public support and cooperation as the new leadership works to deepen professionalism, discipline and service delivery across the organisation.
