End of an Era: Showmax to Shut Down After 11 Years

In a shocking move, MultiChoice has announced the discontinuation of its popular streaming platform, Showmax, after eleven years of operation. The decision was communicated to subscribers on Thursday, with the company citing a need to “focus on strengthening our overall digital offering and ensuring long-term sustainability in an increasingly competitive streaming environment.”

According to the statement, subscribers can continue to access the service as usual, with no immediate interruption expected. MultiChoice assured users that they remain a priority, and further details on the transition process will be shared in advance.

Launched in 2015 in South Africa, Showmax has expanded rapidly across the continent, offering sports, movies, documentaries, and series to scores of countries. The platform’s shutdown comes after last year’s approval of MultiChoice’s takeover by French media giant Canal+.

Canal+’s acquisition of Africa’s largest pay-TV group, which includes DStv and GOtv, is expected to reshape the continent’s entertainment landscape. As part of the deal, Canal+ has committed to investing in local content and promoting diversity in South Africa’s audiovisual sector.

The Showmax shutdown marks a significant shift in the African streaming market.
