Henry Nwosu, Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner, has been laid to rest in his ancestral home in Owerri, Imo State, in the southeastern part of Nigeria.
The legendary midfielder, who passed away at 62, was moved from Lagos State Teaching Hospital to his hometown for burial preparations.
Former teammate Segun Odegbami, who announced Nwosu’s death, expressed deep sorrow:
“It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON. May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven,” Odegbami said.
Nwosu, known for his exceptional skills, played a crucial role in Nigeria’s first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph in 1980 and went on to represent the country in several major tournaments.
His legacy extends beyond his playing career, as he contributed to Nigerian football as a coach and mentor.
The family is meeting with stakeholders to plan a befitting burial, and condolences are pouring in from across the country
