In a dramatic political move, former Lagos PDP governorship candidate, Funso Doherty, has walked away from the Peoples Democratic Party, citing deepening cracks within the party.
Doherty, who only joined the PDP in 2024, made his resignation public in a letter posted on his 𝕏 handle on Saturday, pointing to the party’s lingering internal crisis as the tipping point.
He explained that recent developments — especially a court ruling that nullified the party’s 2025 national convention — played a major role in his decision. According to him, the judgment further deepened divisions and reshaped the party’s leadership structure in a way he found troubling.
Doherty revealed that even before the ruling, he had written to the President of the Court of Appeal, urging a swift resolution of multiple legal disputes involving the party due to their potential impact on Nigeria’s electoral process.
He argued that the outcome of the case has effectively handed control of the PDP to a faction he believes is aligned with interests backing the re-election of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Describing the situation as unacceptable, Doherty said he could not remain part of what he sees as a broken system — especially at a time when Nigerians are grappling with worsening economic conditions and insecurity.
He stressed that the people of Lagos deserve better governance and meaningful improvements in their daily lives.
The former candidate also used the moment to highlight the urgent need for a stronger, united opposition, warning that Nigeria’s democracy is becoming increasingly fragile.
According to him, this is not the time for division among opposition forces that claim to stand for accountability, constitutional order, and the welfare of citizens.
Doherty added that his decision to leave the PDP is also driven by his commitment to building that unity, particularly in Lagos State, where he believes a cohesive opposition is now more important than ever.
