NiMet Sounds Alarm: Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain to Hit Many Nigerian States.
Nigeria may be in for a mix of scorching heat and sudden downpours as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh nationwide weather advisory ahead of Friday.
In its latest forecast released from its headquarters in Abuja, the agency warned that rainfall activity is expected to increase across several parts of the country even as warm temperatures continue to dominate the atmosphere.
According to NiMet, northern states will begin the day with mostly bright and sunny conditions. However, cloud build-up is expected later in the afternoon, which could trigger isolated thunderstorms in some areas, particularly in Taraba State and Adamawa State.
The agency noted that despite the sunshine, the region will remain largely hot, with the possibility of localised storms forming as the day progresses.
For the North-Central region, including Nasarawa State and Benue State, residents should expect a cloudy morning with occasional sunshine before thunderstorms and moderate rainfall develop later in the afternoon and evening.
NiMet advised people in the region to schedule outdoor activities earlier in the day, warning that weather conditions could worsen as evening approaches.
In the southern part of the country, the forecast points to more widespread rainfall. The day is expected to begin with cloudy skies and short sunny intervals before thunderstorms set in across several states, including Enugu State, Ebonyi State, Abia State, Anambra State, Imo State, Rivers State, Bayelsa State, Akwa Ibom State and Cross River State.
Rainfall is expected to become heavier in many parts of the region as the day goes on. However, Lagos State and Ogun State may largely experience cloudy conditions with little or no significant rainfall.
NiMet also warned that the approaching thunderstorms could reduce visibility and disrupt movement, particularly for motorists and outdoor workers.
The agency cautioned that strong winds could occur before the storms, urging residents to secure loose objects and drive carefully due to potentially slippery roads.
People living in flood-prone communities were advised to stay alert during periods of heavy rain, while Nigerians were also reminded to drink plenty of water to cope with the persistent heat.
Airline operators were equally advised to obtain location-specific weather updates to ensure safe flight planning and smooth operations.
