Hollywood icon, John Travolta is stepping behind the camera for the first time, and the global film world is about to see the result. The veteran actor’s directorial debut, “Propeller One-Way Night Coach,” has been selected to make its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2026.
Festival organisers confirmed on Thursday that the film will screen in the Cannes Premiere Selection, marking a major milestone for Travolta as he transitions from acting to directing. The project, produced by Apple Original Films, is based on a children’s book Travolta wrote and illustrated in 1997, inspired by memories from his childhood and his lifelong fascination with aviation.
Although the exact premiere date has not yet been announced, the film is expected to debut during the festival before launching globally on Apple TV+ on May 29.
Story Inspired by Flight and Childhood Dreams
The story follows a young aviation enthusiast named Jeff who sets off on an unforgettable journey across the United States with his mother after she decides to relocate to Hollywood. What begins as a simple flight soon turns into an adventure filled with surprises from quirky passengers and friendly flight attendants to unexpected stopovers and the thrill of seeing first class for the first time.
Newcomer, Clark Shotwell, plays the young Jeff, while Kelly Eviston‑Quinnett stars as his mother. Travolta’s daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta, also appears in the film alongside Olga Hoffmann, both portraying flight attendants.
The film is produced by Travolta’s own production banner, JTP Films, in partnership with Kids at Play, with producers including Jason Berger and Amy Laslett.
A Lifelong Passion for Aviation
Travolta’s connection to aviation goes far beyond the film’s storyline. The actor has long been known for his love of flying, a passion that started in his teenage years when he watched planes take off near his home close to LaGuardia Airport.
He began flying at just 15 years old and earned his pilot’s licence at 22. Over the years, Travolta has logged more than 9,000 flight hours and is certified to fly several aircraft, including the Boeing 707, Boeing 737, Boeing 747 and the Airbus A380.
Travolta’s History with Cannes
While this is his first time directing a film for the festival, Travolta is no stranger to Cannes. Several of his past films have screened there, including Pulp Fiction and She’s So Lovely in competition, as well as Primary Colours in a special out-of-competition slot.
The actor has built a legendary career spanning more than five decades, starring in classics such as Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Blow Out and Hairspray.
Cannes 2026 Opening Film
The upcoming 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will officially kick off on May 12 with the premiere of La Vénus électrique, directed by Pierre Salvadori.
