The Nigerian Cancer Society has called for an urgent investigation into controversial social media personality Blessing CEO, following allegations that she falsely claimed to be battling cancer in order to collect donations from the public.
The organisation says the claims, which have been widely circulated online, raise serious concerns about the exploitation of sensitive health issues for personal benefit. According to the society, if the accusations turn out to be true, the matter could seriously damage public trust and harm people who genuinely rely on support while battling life-threatening illnesses.
Speaking on the issue, the society’s spokesperson, Bashir Mohammed, strongly condemned any attempt to use a serious medical condition as a tool for financial gain.
“Exploiting a serious illness for personal gain undermines trust and harms genuine patients,” he said, stressing that such actions could discourage people from supporting legitimate cancer patients and medical causes.
The society said it is closely monitoring the situation and may involve security agencies if investigations confirm any wrongdoing. Officials warned that misleading the public about a disease as serious as cancer could have serious consequences, particularly at a time when many patients depend on public goodwill and donations to access treatment.
The organisation also urged Nigerians to be cautious when responding to emotional medical appeals circulating on social media. According to the group, people should always verify fundraising campaigns through credible institutions, recognised medical organisations, or trusted channels before making financial contributions.
