Shock and grief have swept through Ghana’s football community following the tragic death of young footballer, Dominic Frimpong, who was killed during a violent armed robbery targeting his team’s bus.
The 20-year-old winger, who played for Berekum Chelsea, lost his life after gunmen ambushed the club’s bus while the team was returning from a league match.
According to reports, the attack happened on Sunday along the road between Goaso and Bibiani as the team travelled back from Samreboi, where they had just played a Ghana Premier League match against Samartex.
In a statement released by the club, the bus was reportedly blocked by armed men who attempted to stop the vehicle. As the driver tried to reverse and escape the danger, the attackers opened fire.
Panic broke out as players and officials rushed off the bus and fled into nearby bushes to avoid being hit by the gunshots. Sadly, Frimpong did not survive the attack.
The Ghana Football Association later confirmed the heartbreaking news, describing the young winger’s death as a devastating loss not only to his club but to the entire Ghanaian football community.
In its statement, the Association said Frimpong was a talented and dedicated player whose passion for the game reflected the spirit of the league. Football authorities also promised to review and strengthen security arrangements for clubs travelling for domestic competitions.
The tragic incident has reignited concerns about safety on roads used by football teams during league matches. A similar attack occurred in 2023 when the bus of Legon Cities was targeted after a match in Samreboi, though no casualties were reported at the time.
For teammates, fans and officials, Frimpong’s death marks a painful moment for Ghanaian football, cutting short the life of a promising young player who still had his career ahead of him.
