Luton to Deploy Live Facial Recognition Tech in Town Centre Crackdown on Crime

Luton Town Centre will see the rollout of Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology this Saturday, April 18, as part of efforts to boost public safety and combat crime.

The system uses live camera feeds and a watchlist of offender images to identify individuals posing a risk to the community.

The technology, deployed by local authorities, aims to help specialist teams apprehend suspects and keep the public safe. Officials say it has already proved effective in making arrests.

While acknowledging concerns over privacy, authorities stress they follow national guidance from the LFR Taskforce, giving at least five days’ notice of deployments.

Exceptions may apply in certain cases, subject to strict criteria.

“Let’s work together to keep our communities safe,” the statement concludes.
