The Labour Party has kicked off preparations for the 2027 general elections with the inauguration of an eight-member screening committee tasked with vetting aspirants seeking elective positions across the country.
The Party announced the development in a public notice jointly signed by its National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, and National Secretary, Iheanacho Obioma, on Friday in Abuja.
According to the statement, the committee was constituted in line with the provisions of the Party’s constitution and guidelines governing the 2026 primaries.
Nenadi Usman will chair the panel, while other members include Mrs. Oluchi Okpara, Mohammed Salisu, Mrs. Martina Umana, Mrs. Deborah Yusuf, Chibuzo Okereke and Dr. Olu Ayewo. Obioma is to serve as secretary of the committee.
The Labour Party said the panel would oversee the screening of aspirants contesting for presidential, governorship and National Assembly positions ahead of the primaries.
The committee is also expected to verify the authenticity of credentials submitted by aspirants and ensure strict compliance with the Party’s constitution, the Electoral Act 2026 and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
As part of the timetable released by the Party, governorship and House of Assembly aspirants will be screened on May 20, while screening for National Assembly and presidential aspirants is scheduled for May 22.
The Party urged members of the committee to carry out their responsibilities with integrity and fairness as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum.
