Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress presidential hopeful, Atiku Abubakar, has declared that democracy is thriving in Nigeria following the successful conduct of the Party’s nationwide primary elections.
Atiku made the statement on Monday shortly after casting his vote at the Ajiya Ward Polling Unit in Jimeta, Yola, Adamawa State. The remark was contained in a statement issued by the Atiku Media Office and shared on X.
The ADC presidential primary took place simultaneously across 8,809 wards in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking to supporters after voting, Atiku said the massive turnout recorded during the exercise showed that Party members were fully committed to the ADC’s internal democratic process.
“The large turnout of voters is a clear indication of how Party members are willing to participate in the ADC internal democratic processes,” the former Vice President said. “I have no doubt that democracy has come to stay.”
Party supporters cheered loudly as Atiku cast his vote at the polling unit.
Voting reportedly began shortly after his arrival from Abuja, with Atiku contesting alongside former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatudeen.
According to the statement, the Returning Officer, Hon. Umar Jada, announced earlier that Ajiya Ward had unanimously endorsed Atiku’s candidacy.
“At the end of the process, a total of 3,220 votes were reportedly cast in his favour,” the statement added.
