Residents of Lagos have received an apology from the state government over the lingering waste management challenges affecting parts of the city, with officials assuring that measures are already underway to tackle the problem.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, acknowledged the concerns of residents and said the government was actively working to improve the situation across the State.
Wahab made the remarks in a statement reposted on his official X handle on Friday following an interview on ARISE Television.
“We had a challenge and we are fixing it,” the Commissioner stated.
He explained that Lagos was moving away from its traditional linear waste disposal system and embracing a circular waste management model that sees waste as a valuable resource rather than mere refuse.
According to him, the transition is expected to boost environmental sustainability while unlocking economic opportunities through the conversion and reuse of waste materials.
As part of the initiative, Wahab disclosed that the State had commissioned a food waste digester facility in Ikosi to transform organic waste into energy.
He added that the project was piloted and funded by C-40 in support of Lagos State’s long-term vision for sustainable waste management.
The Commissioner noted that the initiative forms part of broader efforts by the government to modernise the State’s waste management framework and improve environmental outcomes.
Wahab also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthening sanitation systems and delivering cleaner, healthier communities for residents across Lagos.
