LONDON, United Kingdom – The UK Government has confirmed the latest list of countries whose citizens must obtain a visa before travelling to the United Kingdom for visits of up to six months, following an update to the country’s Immigration Rules.
The updated guidance, published by the Home Office, reaffirms the nationalities classified as “visa nationals” under UK immigration law. Citizens of these countries are required to secure a Standard Visitor visa before travelling to Britain, regardless of whether their trip is for tourism, business, visiting family and friends, short-term study, or private medical treatment.
The Home Office said the changes are part of its ongoing efforts to keep the UK’s immigration system up to date while maintaining border security and ensuring immigration policies remain clear and consistent.
Among the countries whose citizens require a visa for short visits are Nigeria, Ghana, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Russia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Uganda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Jamaica, among others.
The updated Immigration Rules apply to visits of up to six months. While travellers from visa-national countries must obtain approval before travelling, citizens of several other countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and most European nations, can generally visit the UK for up to six months without applying for a visitor visa in advance, provided they meet the UK’s entry requirements.
The Home Office also reminded travellers that visa-free travel does not automatically guarantee entry into the UK. All visitors are subject to immigration checks on arrival and may be asked to provide evidence of the purpose of their visit, proof of sufficient funds, accommodation details and plans to leave the country at the end of their stay.
Officials advised anyone planning to travel to the UK to check the latest visa requirements before booking flights or making travel arrangements, as immigration rules can change depending on government policy or international agreements.
