The Ogun State House of Assembly has cleared former Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, of the embezzlement allegation that was linked to his removal from office in 2024.
In a major reversal, the lawmakers also changed the status of his removal from impeachment to resignation, following a resolution adopted during Wednesday’s plenary at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The decision came after the Deputy Speaker, Mrs. Lateefat Ajayi, presented the report of the Committee of the Whole House, which reviewed Oluomo’s earlier motion submitted to the Assembly on March 31.
Ajayi moved for the adoption of the report, with Mr. Yusuf Amosun seconding the motion. It was subsequently approved unanimously through a voice vote.
The Assembly held that the embezzlement allegation was not included in the notice of removal served on Oluomo and could not be established against him based on the evidence available.
The lawmakers also considered Oluomo’s request for exoneration or the presentation of evidence to substantiate the allegation, with reference to Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
According to the report, the House reviewed the available evidence before withdrawing the allegation of embezzlement.
The Assembly further resolved that the allegation would no longer be recognised as one of the reasons for Oluomo’s removal from office.
It also overturned his removal and commuted the impeachment to a resignation.
The House said the decision was taken in the interest of camaraderie, unity and harmony among its members.
