LAGOS, NIGERIA: Agatha Elumelu-Obiekwugo, sister of billionaire businessman and investor Tony Elumelu, has been appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afriland Properties Plc, a leading Nigerian real estate company.
Afriland Properties announced the leadership change on Monday, August 31, 2026.
Elumelu-Obiekwugo succeeds Emmanuel Nnorom, who is retiring after more than a decade as chairman of the real estate company.
Her appointment marks a new chapter for the company as it continues to expand its property portfolio and strengthen its presence in Nigeria’s real estate sector.
Agatha joined the Afriland Properties board in October 2018 as a Non-Executive Director. During her years on the board, she served on key committees, including the Finance, Risk and General-Purpose Committee, as well as the Nomination, Audit and Governance Committee.
She brings more than 30 years of professional experience spanning banking, commerce, consulting, information technology and the oil and gas industry.
Elumelu-Obiekwugo is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Adassa Energy Limited, an oil and gas company. She also serves on the boards of Heirs Insurance Brokers and Houce Limited and is a founding member of the Women in Energy Network.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Edo State University and an MBA in Marketing from ESUT Business School. She also completed the Strategy Execution Programme at Harvard Business School.
Afriland Properties is an investee company of Tony Elumelu’s Heirs Holdings, whose investment portfolio spans sectors including real estate, energy, power, financial services, healthcare, technology and hospitality.
The company’s activities cover property development, asset and property management, facilities management and strategic joint-venture investments.
As the new chairman, Elumelu-Obiekwugo is expected to provide strategic leadership as Afriland Properties pursues further expansion and seeks to create long-term value for its shareholders and other stakeholders.
Her appointment also adds another significant leadership role to the Elumelu family’s growing presence across Nigeria’s business landscape.
