FG Unveils Plan for 360km/h High-Speed Rail Linking Lagos to Maiduguri
The Federal Government says it is planning a high-speed rail system linking Lagos with Maiduguri, with trains expected to reach speeds of up to 360 kilometres per hour.
ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has announced plans to develop a high-speed rail line linking Lagos with Maiduguri, as part of efforts to expand Nigeria’s transport infrastructure and reduce the country’s dependence on road travel.
The proposed rail system is expected to operate at speeds of up to 360 kilometres per hour, potentially making it one of the fastest rail projects ever proposed in Nigeria.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Olufunso Adebiyi, disclosed the plan during the opening of the 19th National Council on Transportation in Abuja.
According to reports from the event, the proposed route is expected to link Lekki in Lagos State to Maiduguri in Borno State, connecting Nigeria’s commercial hub in the South-West with the North-East.
Adebiyi said the proposed rail project forms part of the Federal Government’s wider plan to give Nigerians more transportation options by strengthening rail, road, maritime and air travel.
He explained that the government wants to reduce the heavy reliance on road transportation, particularly for long-distance travel and the movement of goods across the country.
A Faster Alternative to Road Travel
At a proposed speed of up to 360km/h, the rail service could significantly reduce travel time between major Nigerian cities.
Adebiyi suggested that the government’s broader rail development plans could eventually make it possible for passengers to travel between Abuja and Lagos in about three hours, providing a faster alternative to long road journeys.
The Federal Government has also indicated that the proposed high-speed rail infrastructure could involve elevated sections built on piles, allowing trains to maintain higher speeds.
Part of Nigeria’s Railway Expansion
The Lagos-Maiduguri proposal comes as the Federal Government continues to expand and rehabilitate railway infrastructure across the country.
Government officials have described the development of the railway sector as a major revival of rail transportation in Nigeria.
Existing and operational corridors include the Lagos-Ibadan, Abuja-Kaduna, Warri-Itakpe and Port Harcourt-Aba rail lines, while construction and development work continues on several other routes across the country.
The government also announced plans to develop light rail projects in Lagos and Kano, with similar systems expected to be considered for other state capitals in the future.
No Construction Date Yet
While the announcement has generated excitement about the future of long-distance rail travel in Nigeria, the Federal Government has not yet publicly announced a construction timetable, project cost or completion date for the proposed Lagos-Maiduguri high-speed rail line.
For now, the project remains part of the government’s transportation plans.
If eventually developed, the proposed rail corridor could transform travel between Nigeria’s South-West and North-East, improve the movement of people and goods and provide a major alternative to road transportation.
The big question, however, will be how quickly the ambitious project moves from announcement to reality.
