The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its 2027 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
The Party said the decision followed extensive consultations with its leadership, coalition partners, youth and women groups, as well as representatives from the country’s six geopolitical zones.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday by the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.
According to the Party, Amaechi emerged as the preferred vice-presidential candidate after finishing as runner-up to Atiku Abubakar during the Party’s presidential primary.
Following the primary, Amaechi had alleged that the exercise was manipulated in Atiku’s favour even before the final collation of results.
The former Rivers State Governor joined the ADC last year after dumping the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he served as Director-General of the Party’s Presidential Campaign Council.
In the statement, the ADC described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as the coming together of two experienced statesmen with the leadership capacity, national appeal and governance experience needed to tackle Nigeria’s challenges and drive economic growth, security and inclusive development.
The Party highlighted Amaechi’s extensive public service record, noting that he served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State and later Minister of Transportation, where he supervised major transportation and railway modernisation projects.
It added that Amaechi’s influence across the South-South and other parts of Southern Nigeria, combined with his reputation as a reform-minded administrator and coalition builder, would strengthen the Party’s chances in the 2027 presidential election.
The ADC said the Atiku-Amaechi ticket reflects its commitment to presenting what it described as a credible national alternative capable of restoring confidence in government, reviving the economy, improving security and uniting the country.
The Party also called on its members, coalition partners, civil society organisations, youth groups, women leaders and other Nigerians to support the ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.
