Fresh political calculations may be unfolding ahead of the 2027 general election after the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) formally ceded its presidential ticket to the South for a single four-year tenure.
The decision was sealed at the Party’s maiden National Convention, where delegates overwhelmingly backed a motion moved by Afam Victor Ogene, the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State in the House of Representatives.
Under the agreement reached by the Party, power will rotate back to the North immediately after the completion of the southern candidate’s four-year term in office.
The development is already being interpreted in political circles as a major boost for former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, alongside other southern politicians eyeing the NDC’s presidential ticket.
The move comes days after Obi and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, joined the NDC on Sunday.
Obi, who flew the Labour Party flag in the 2023 presidential election, dumped the ADC amid complaints over persistent court cases, internal division, distrust within the Party and alleged outside interference.
Kwankwaso, on the other hand, is a former Minister of Defence, ex-governor of Kano State and the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
