The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) is partnering with the University of Delaware and the University of Manchester to generate reliable irrigation cropland data using space technology. The goal is to boost food security and agricultural planning in Nigeria.
The 3-day workshop on the Irrigation Earth Observation (IrrEO) project in Abuja aims to harness earth observation tech to produce accurate, high-resolution data on irrigation development nationwide. Nigeria currently utilises less than 10% of its 3 million hectares of irrigation potential.
The project will:
– Deploy satellite tech to monitor crop production and water use
– Identify optimal planting periods
– Promote efficient water management
– Support evidence-based decision-making
The 4-year project will involve public institutions, private sector actors, and development partners.
