Tesla’s chief executive, Elon Musk, announced on Saturday that the company’s ambitious artificial intelligence chip manufacturing initiative, known as Terafab, is expected to launch within the next seven days.
The project is part of Tesla’s broader strategy to secure a large supply of specialized processors needed for its rapidly expanding artificial-intelligence and autonomous driving programs. Musk has previously indicated that the company may need to construct an extremely large semiconductor fabrication facility to meet its future computing demands.
Tesla is currently developing its fifth-generation AI processor, often referred to as the AI5 chip, which will play a key role in advancing the company’s autonomous driving capabilities. These processors are designed to power Tesla’s in-vehicle AI systems, including its Full Self-Driving technology.
During Tesla’s annual shareholders meeting last year, Musk discussed potential manufacturing strategies for the chips and hinted that collaboration with established semiconductor companies could be considered. At the time, he mentioned that the electric-vehicle maker might explore working with Intel, although no formal agreement had been reached.
Musk also noted that Tesla has relationships with major chip manufacturers such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Samsung, both of which have been involved in producing processors used in Tesla’s AI hardware.
According to Musk, even the most optimistic projections from external suppliers may not be enough to meet Tesla’s long-term chip requirements. This growing demand is what prompted the company to consider building its own massive fabrication facility dedicated to AI processors.
He described the proposed Terafab facility as a project significantly larger than Tesla’s well-known Gigafactories, emphasizing that such scale could be necessary to produce the volume of chips required for Tesla’s future technologies.
Tesla has not yet released additional details about the Terafab project, including its location or production capacity.
