Relief may soon be on the way for Nigerians battling high fuel costs as Dangote Refinery has crashed the price of diesel, sparking fresh expectations of a possible reduction in petrol prices nationwide.
The refinery reduced the gantry price of automotive gas oil (diesel) from ₦1,800 to ₦1,600 per litre, representing a ₦200 cut.
The development was confirmed on Thursday by the National Publicity Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Chinedu Ukadike.
With the latest adjustment, the 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery has effectively slashed diesel prices by 11.76 percent.
The reduction is expected to reflect across filling stations nationwide, where diesel had previously sold between ₦1,800 and ₦2,000 per litre.
Industry observers believe the move could also pave the way for a drop in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.
At the moment, petrol prices in most filling stations across Abuja and neighbouring areas range between ₦1,350 and ₦1,365 per litre.
The instability in local fuel prices has largely been driven by uncertainty in the global oil market following the Middle East crisis that escalated on February 28, 2026.
The conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel has continued to rattle global energy markets, triggering sharp fluctuations in crude oil prices.
Checks on Thursday morning showed Brent crude trading at about $95 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate stood around $90 per barrel.
