Igwe Title Sparks Tension in South Africa: Nigerians Break Silence, Set the Record Straight
The Nigerian Citizens’ Association South Africa (NICASA) has moved quickly to calm rising tensions after the controversial conferment of the “Igwe Ndigbo” title on one of its members in East London.
Amid backlash and reports of unrest, the group insists the move was purely cultural – not a challenge to South Africa’s traditional institutions or authority.
In a statement released by NICASA President, Frank Onyekwelu, the Association stressed that the honour given to Solomon Eziko was never intended to undermine local governance or the sovereignty of South Africa.
The clarification comes after reports of violence in the KuGompo area of the Eastern Cape, allegedly linked to the event, raising fears among both Nigerians and South Africans about growing division in the community.
NICASA explained that the “Igwe Ndigbo” title is a long-standing cultural symbol among the Igbo diaspora, designed to promote unity, preserve heritage, and strengthen social bonds – not to wield political power.
“There was no coronation, no kingdom established,” the group emphasised, noting that the ceremony was simply a cultural installation aimed at fostering peace and identity among Igbo people abroad.
Eziko, at the centre of the controversy, has reportedly expressed regret over any confusion or misinterpretation surrounding the event.
Reaffirming its stance, NICASA pledged full respect for South Africa’s constitution, laws, and traditional leadership structures, adding that the Nigerian community remains committed to peaceful coexistence and mutual respect in its host country.
