Authorities in San Francisco have taken a 20-year-old suspect into custody after a shocking firebomb incident targeting the home of Sam Altman, the C.E.O. of OpenAI.
Police say the suspect allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at a residence in the city’s North Beach neighbourhood during the early hours of Friday morning, raising alarm about growing tensions surrounding the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence industry.
How the Incident Unfolded
According to the San Francisco Police Department, the attack happened at around 4:12 a.m. when an unidentified man hurled an incendiary device at the property before fleeing the scene.
About an hour later, officers responding to reports of a man threatening to burn down another building detained a suspect nearby. Investigators later discovered evidence linking the individual to the earlier attack on Altman’s residence.
No Injuries Reported
An official spokesperson for OpenAI confirmed that no one was injured during the incident. The company also thanked law enforcement officers for responding quickly and said it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have not yet revealed the suspect’s identity or announced formal charges.
