The Federal Government has announced a two-day public holiday to allow Christians across the country celebrate the Easter festivities. Friday, April 3, and Monday, April 6, 2026, have been set aside as official holidays nationwide.
The announcement was made in a statement released on Wednesday by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
In his Easter message, the Minister congratulated Christians in Nigeria and those living abroad, describing the season as a time to reflect on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. He noted that the celebration reminds believers of important values such as love, sacrifice, forgiveness and patience.
Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to embrace these virtues in their daily lives, stressing that they are vital for peaceful coexistence and the country’s progress. He also encouraged citizens to continue promoting tolerance, unity and understanding among people of different backgrounds.
According to the Minister, the Federal Government remains committed to implementing policies that will stimulate economic growth, encourage national renewal and improve the wellbeing of Nigerians.
He expressed hope that the Easter season would inspire citizens to renew their sense of responsibility toward one another and the nation.
The Minister further wished Christians a joyful and peaceful Easter celebration and called on Nigerians, regardless of religion or ethnicity, to use the period to strengthen peace and national unity.
Easter is one of the most significant celebrations in Christianity, marking the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, an event observed by Christians around the world.
