Nigeria’s electoral umpire has put its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise on hold, pushing the process until after the 2027 general elections. The announcement means millions of registered voters will not undergo the planned verification exercise before the next nationwide polls.
The decision was disclosed by the Independent National Electoral Commission following a meeting with the country’s Resident Electoral Commissioners on April 10.
In a statement released by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the electoral body explained that the revalidation programme remains a key part of its long-term plans to maintain a reliable voter database.
According to the commission, the exercise is designed to review and verify existing voter records across the country. It would help ensure personal details in the voter register are accurate, remove duplicate or ineligible entries, and strengthen the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral roll.
The process would also allow registered voters to confirm their information and correct any errors where necessary.
Despite the postponement, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections when Nigerians head to the polls for the 2027 general election.
