Amazon has officially launched drone parcel deliveries in the United Kingdom for the first time, with Darlington, County Durham as the pilot location. The service allows eligible Prime customers to receive small packages by air in under two hours.
Customers living within a 7.5-mile radius of Amazon’s Darlington fulfilment centre can now order selected items weighing under 5lb (2.2kg) via drone. The packages, roughly the size of a shoebox, are dropped from about 12 feet into customers’ gardens or yards.
The current rollout includes everyday products like batteries, beauty items, cables, and office supplies. Amazon says it aims to complete up to 10 flights per hour and 100 deliveries daily on weekdays.
Amazon is using its latest MK30 drone for the UK trial. The aircraft is fitted with advanced sensors and machine learning technology that helps it detect and avoid obstacles such as washing lines, trampolines, people, and other aircraft. The drone operates autonomously using GPS and is designed to be as quiet as an average van.
David Carbon, Vice President of Amazon Prime Air, said safety remains the top priority.
“Starting flights in Darlington marks an important milestone in bringing drone delivery to the UK. We’ve worked closely with Darlington Council and the Civil Aviation Authority.”
Early participant Rob Shield said the drones quickly became a local attraction.
“Initially it was a novelty, so we were ordering everything under the sun. Pens, paper, chocolates anything to make it keep coming.”
He added that neighbours now use it for practical needs like tape measures and supplies. However, not everyone is convinced. One resident described the concept as “nutty as a fruitcake.”
Darlington is currently the only location outside the United States where Amazon is testing the service. The Civil Aviation Authority has approved the trial until the end of 2026 and secured temporary protected airspace for operations.
Amazon first announced UK drone delivery plans in 2023, but the rollout took longer than expected. The company says the technology has strong commercial potential.
“We wouldn’t be doing it if it wasn’t commercially viable. It’s a business, and that’s the goal we’re going after,” Carbon stated.
Experts say drone delivery still faces hurdles in crowded urban areas. Dr. Anna Jackman, Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Reading, noted that high-rise buildings and dense populations make drone operations difficult.
For now, Amazon’s UK drone service remains limited to Darlington as it tests safety, efficiency, and customer response.
