Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, over allegations of a ₦500 billion fraud.
Abdullahi was taken into custody in Abuja the nation’s capital, according to EFCC officials.
Details of the alleged offense have not yet been made public on Wednesday, May 13.
The Energy Commission of Nigeria oversees national energy policy and planning, making the case one to watch given its scope and the amount involved.
EFCC is expected to release more information as investigations progress. At the time of filing, Abdullahi had not issued a public statement, and it was not immediately clear if charges had been filed.
The arrest marks one of the highest-profile actions by the anti-graft agency this year targeting a sitting head of a federal agency.
