Former Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, has officially pitched his tent with the ruling All Progressives Congress, declaring support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration’s policies.
Mimiko, who governed Ondo State from 2009 to 2016, formally joined the APC on Thursday at the Ward 7 Secretariat in Ondo West Local Government Area. His move comes weeks after he resigned from the People’s Democratic Party in April.
Speaking during the event, the former Governor said his decision was driven by the need to support what he described as ongoing efforts by the Tinubu-led government to move Nigeria forward.
According to him, several initiatives introduced by the President show promise, even though more work still needs to be done.
“There are a lot of good things being done by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government,” Mimiko said.
“And though much more will still have to be done, I am coming in to lend my support to ongoing efforts to keep Nigeria on the path of peace, progress, and genuine development.”
Mimiko also praised the administration’s student loan programme and ongoing push for state policing, saying both policies align with his long-held beliefs.
“The NELFUND initiative to democratise access to education is another commendable effort of Mr. President, which must be applauded,” he stated.
He added that the current efforts to decentralise policing further convinced him to join the APC.
Welcoming the former Governor into the Party, Kolawole Babatunde described Mimiko’s defection as a “homecoming,” insisting that the ex-Governor has always identified with progressive politics.
Babatunde also praised Tinubu’s programmes, saying they are already producing results that resonate with Nigerians.
Several APC leaders, government officials, cabinet members, and principal officers of the Ondo State House of Assembly were present at the gathering.
