Atiku Demands Release of El-Rufai Before Eid, Calls Detention Unfair

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged authorities to release former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai before the Eid celebrations, describing his detention as unjust and politically motivated.

Atiku made the demand in a statement on Thursday, arguing that holding El-Rufai without clear charges undermines democratic principles and the rule of law. He said detaining political opponents ahead of major religious holidays sends the wrong signal about Nigeria’s commitment to justice and fair play.

“Detaining El-Rufai at this time is unfair, unnecessary, and raises questions about the true motives behind the action,” Atiku stated. He called on the government to respect due process and release the former governor so he can observe Eid with his family.

The call adds to growing political tension ahead of 2027, with opposition figures increasingly speaking out against what they describe as targeted harassment of critics.

El-Rufai has been in detention over allegations linked to his time in office, though his legal team insists the charges are politically driven.
