LASEPA Shuts 3 Lagos Churches Over Noise Pollution

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has sealed three churches in Lagos as part of a crackdown on noise pollution across the state.

The enforcement exercise, which targeted 11 establishments in Agege and Mushin, saw the affected churches shut for allegedly violating the state’s environmental noise regulations.

According to LASEPA, the churches sealed are:

  • Holy Temple of Christ, Ayetoro Street, behind NIPCO Filling Station, Mushin
  • Christ Covenant Gospel Church, Western District, along Ikorodu Road, Fadeyi, Mushin
  • Christ Apostolic Church, Oye Iyanu, Mushin Road, Church Bus Stop, Itire

Officials said the action followed repeated warnings and complaints from residents about excessive noise levels during services, especially during late-night vigils and early morning programs.

LASEPA reiterated that the enforcement is not targeted at any religion, but is part of ongoing efforts to ensure public health and maintain peace in residential areas. The agency added that the remaining 8 establishments on its list, cutting across businesses and social centres in Agege and Mushin, are also being monitored.

The agency urged religious centres and other establishments to obtain soundproofing equipment and adhere to the permissible noise level of 55 decibels in residential areas between 10 pm and 6 am. Residents in the affected areas have commended the move, saying noise pollution has been a major source of disturbance for years.
