According to the President, the process has remained largely peaceful, organised, and in line with democratic principles guiding the party’s internal electoral system.
“This is a demonstration of internal democracy,” Tinubu said while addressing journalists after the exercise. He added that the primaries reflected “grassroots politics” where members are directly involved in shaping the future of the party.
Tinubu also expressed satisfaction with the conduct of governors and party officials overseeing the exercises in different states across the country. He noted that activities ranging from ward congresses to delegate accreditation and membership validation had reportedly been carried out successfully.
The President stated that the APC leadership remains committed to maintaining transparent and inclusive processes capable of strengthening democratic participation within the party structure.
During the Lagos exercise, Tinubu was accompanied by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu and received by several APC leaders, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, party officials, and senior government figures.
The primaries form part of preparations by the APC ahead of future electoral contests across Nigeria. Party leaders have repeatedly emphasised the importance of unity, transparency, and broad participation as the ruling party positions itself for upcoming elections.
Tinubu further said the support and enthusiasm shown by APC members nationwide have increased expectations on his administration to deliver more democratic and economic progress for Nigerians.
“I’m just excited. They challenge me to do more,” the President said while reacting to the support he received from party members during the exercise.
Political observers say the APC primaries are being closely monitored because they serve as a major test of the party’s internal cohesion and organisational strength ahead of future national campaigns.
The ruling party has continued to defend its internal electoral procedures amid criticism from opposition figures and civil society groups who have occasionally questioned the transparency of political party primaries in Nigeria. However, APC leaders insist the process remains open and participatory for members across the grassroots level.
Nigeria’s political parties traditionally conduct congresses and primaries to select candidates and delegates for major elections. Analysts believe peaceful exercises within parties often contribute to reducing post-primary disputes and strengthening political stability.
