Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) is gearing up for its 16th show, and the message is loud and clear: African fashion has arrived. It is done, waiting for approval.
Set to make a return to London in the summer of 2026, AFWL isn’t just another date on the fashion calendar. It shows how far African fashion has come and hints at where it is headed. For years, folks kept saying the industry was the next big thing. But that talk feels old now. African designers aren’t just knocking on doors anymore but are making their own spaces, setting their own rules, and deciding what things are worth.
Sixteen years ago, it started as just a way to get noticed. Now, AFWL has become something bigger. It has grown with the designers it backs, turning runway shows into a whole system that brings together creativity and business, culture and planning, and talent and chances. The focus has changed from just getting applause to keeping things going, from showing up to lasting.
Queen Ronke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi, the founder, has always been clear about what she wants to do.
She said, African fashion has never been short on ideas. What we’ve been trying to do for the past 16 years is to build a structure, helping designers go from just being seen to being able to make a living, and from getting applause to lasting a long time.
That idea is what AFWL 2026 is all about.
This year’s show puts a big stress on being prepared. Designers and brands are getting help not just to show off their stuff, but to get ready for selling around the world, building stronger ways to make things, setting fair prices, taking ownership, and growing in the long run.
