History was made at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Morocco became the first African nation to book a place in the round of 16 of the tournament.
The Atlas Lions edged past The Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a fiercely contested encounter ended 1-1 following 120 minutes of football.
The Dutch had looked set for victory when Cody Gakpo fired them ahead in the 72nd minute.
The goal came after Crysencio Summerville burst through on goal and was brought down by Noussair Mazraoui, with Gakpo reacting quickest to hammer the loose ball into the net.
Morocco, however, refused to give up and found a way back into the contest through a headed effort from Issa Diop.
The penalty shoot-out proved disastrous for the Dutch as Quentin Timber, Summerville and Justin Kluivert all failed to convert their spot-kicks, sending Morocco into the next round.
The North Africans will now take on co-hosts Canada for a place in the quarter-finals.
Elsewhere, four-time champions, Germany, suffered a shock exit from the tournament after losing to Paraguay in a dramatic penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
Kai Havertz of Arsenal and Nick Woltemade of Newcastle United both saw their penalties saved by Paraguayan goalkeeper, Orlando Gill.
Paraguay also had opportunities to settle the contest earlier but failed to capitalise as Antonio Sanabria fired wide and Fabian Balbuena was denied by veteran goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer.
The decisive moment eventually arrived in sudden death when Jonathan Tah blasted his effort over the bar before defender, Jose Canale, calmly converted the winning kick to seal a 4-3 shoot-out victory and send Paraguay into the last eight.
