No Closure Planned: OPay Dismisses Viral September Exit Reports

Leading fintech company OPay has dismissed viral reports claiming it will shut down operations in September, describing the claims as false and misleading.
The company issued the clarification on Sunday following the spread of messages across WhatsApp, X, and Facebook alleging that OPay would cease services in Nigeria starting next month.
In a statement, OPay urged customers and the general public to disregard the rumor, stressing that its operations remain fully active and unaffected.
“OPay is not closing down. We remain committed to serving our millions of customers across Nigeria with secure and reliable payment, transfer, and financial services,” the company said.
OPay called on users to verify information through its official channels before sharing, warning that false claims can cause unnecessary panic and disrupt financial activities.
“We understand how important digital payments are to Nigerians. We advise everyone to get updates only from verified OPay platforms and to report any suspicious messages,” the statement added.
The debunk comes amid increased scrutiny of fintech platforms and growing concerns about online misinformation targeting financial services.
Industry analysts say such rumors often resurface during periods of regulatory changes, but there has been no official directive from the Central Bank of Nigeria or any regulator mandating OPay to shut down.
With over 40 million users, OPay is one of Nigeria’s largest mobile money operators, offering services including transfers, bill payments, savings, and POS agency banking.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to regulatory compliance, customer protection, and expanding financial inclusion across the country.
