President Bola Tinubu has shed more light on the sweeping reforms recently approved for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), saying the changes are designed to better prepare young Nigerians for the future and make them more relevant to national development.
The President explained that the reforms are intended to equip graduates with practical skills while creating pathways for greater opportunities for the country’s youth population.
In a statement shared on his verified X account on Wednesday, Tinubu said the reforms, which received the approval of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday, represent part of his administration’s commitment to empowering young people.
“On Monday, at the Federal Executive Council, our administration approved the most consequential reforms of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme since its establishment in 1973.
“On the day I was sworn in as your President, I promised to create meaningful opportunities for our young people. I said women and youth would feature prominently in our administration, and this reform is partly the actualisation of that promise,” the President stated.
Tinubu noted that while the NYSC scheme has played a crucial role in promoting national unity for more than five decades, changing realities in the country now require a fresh direction.
“For 53 years, the NYSC has served the cause of national unity. That mission remains important and must be preserved. But the Nigeria of today demands more,” he added.
