The Nigerian military has announced the surrender of two senior terrorist commanders in Borno State, describing the development as a major boost to ongoing efforts to dismantle insurgent networks in the North-East.
The two high-ranking insurgent leaders surrendered to troops of Sector 2, Operation HADIN KAI, in Geidam on July 4, 2026, before they were moved to Maiduguri at about 7:30 p.m. on July 5 for further processing.
The development was made public on Tuesday in a statement issued by the Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni.
According to the military, the surrendered suspects are currently in custody and undergoing detailed profiling, debriefing and intelligence exploitation.
Operation HADIN KAI identified the two men as Munzirs within the terrorist leadership structure, saying they occupied influential positions in the insurgent group and possessed extensive knowledge of its operations.
“Operation HADIN KAI has recorded another significant breakthrough in the ongoing counter-terrorism campaign following the surrender of two senior commanders to troops of Sector 2 in Geidam on 4 July 2026,” the statement said.
The military added that the commanders arrived in Maiduguri at approximately 1930 hours on July 5 and were immediately taken into military custody.
According to the statement, preliminary interrogation has already produced valuable intelligence capable of strengthening ongoing operations against terrorist elements in the North-East.
“Preliminary interrogation indicates that the two surrendered commanders occupied influential positions and possess extensive knowledge of the group’s operational activities, command arrangements and logistics architecture,” the military stated.
It added that intelligence obtained during the debriefing had provided useful information on the terrorists’ operational methods, logistics network, support structures and sustainment mechanisms.
The military said the intelligence would significantly enhance ongoing intelligence-led operations aimed at locating, disrupting and dismantling the remaining terrorist enclaves across the North-East theatre.
Operation HADIN KAI described the surrender as another major setback for the insurgent group, attributing it to sustained military pressure through coordinated ground operations, air strikes and improved intelligence gathering.
“The surrender of the two commanders represents another major setback for the terrorist faction and further validates the effectiveness of the sustained offensive operations being conducted by troops of Operation HADIN KAI in conjunction with partners,” the statement said.
It noted that relentless military operations have continued to restrict the terrorists’ freedom of movement, weaken their combat capabilities and erode their command-and-control structures.
According to the military, the increasing pressure has made it difficult for many insurgent leaders and fighters to continue resisting, forcing them to surrender.
Reaffirming its commitment to ending insurgency in the region, Operation HADIN KAI said the latest development reflects the continued disintegration of the terrorist organisation.
“The latest development further reinforces the growing disintegration of the terrorist organisation and reflects the cumulative impact of sustained military operations across the theatre,” the statement added.
The military pledged to sustain intelligence-driven operations and continue working with relevant stakeholders until all terrorist elements are either neutralised or compelled to surrender, with the goal of restoring lasting peace, security and stability across the North-East.
