The Kogi State Police Command has arrested three suspects, including the parent of an 11-year-old pupil, over the alleged killing of a teacher who reportedly disciplined the child at school.
The suspects are expected to face prosecution after police concluded investigations into the death of Mariam Usman, a staff member of Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The Command announced the development on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through a statement issued by its spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, saying investigations established a prima facie case of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide against the suspects.
According to the police, the investigation was launched after a complaint was received following Usman’s death on June 25, 2026. Detectives from the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lokoja, subsequently took over the case and arrested three suspects.
The Command said findings revealed that the incident stemmed from disciplinary action the deceased took against an 11-year-old pupil.
Police alleged that on June 17, 2026, Abdullahi Isiaka assaulted Usman at her residence over the punishment she had given his son during school hours.
Investigators further alleged that later the same day, while the teacher was on her way to the mosque for prayers, she was attacked again by Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo.
The investigation also found that on June 18, 2026, Ojonojima Mary, identified as the younger sister of Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo, allegedly went to Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka and assaulted Usman at her workplace.
According to the police, the victim was first treated at Grace Clinic in Ugbamaka before she was referred to Eleojo Clinic in Okpo for further medical attention.
However, she later died from her injuries on June 25, 2026.
Police said investigations established a prima facie case of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide against Ojonojima Mary, Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo and Abdullahi Isiaka.
“Consequently, the investigation has concluded, and the suspects will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction for prosecution,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, commended the detectives who handled the investigation for their professionalism and dedication.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims of violent crimes and assured residents that criminal cases would continue to be investigated thoroughly and professionally.
Kankarofi also urged members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, advising them to seek lawful means of resolving disputes and to continue providing timely and credible information to support crime prevention and law enforcement efforts.
