LAGOS, Nigeria: Nigeria’s media industry has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of veteran journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online, Dr Samson Dotun Oladipo, who died at the age of 56.
Oladipo reportedly died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Lagos, after suddenly taking ill while at work. His death has since triggered an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, journalists, media organisations, colleagues and friends across Nigeria.
The veteran journalist was the publisher of The Eagle Online and a former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), a position he held from 2017 to 2021.
His journalism career spanned almost three decades, during which he worked with several major Nigerian media organisations, including Newswatch, PUNCH, Nigerian Compass, Nigerian Tribune and The Sun, before moving into digital publishing.
Tinubu Mourns ‘Painful Loss’
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described Oladipo’s death as a “painful loss” to Nigeria’s media community and the nation.
In a condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President acknowledged Oladipo’s contribution to journalism, particularly in political reporting and digital publishing.
Tinubu said Oladipo’s professional career demonstrated the important role journalists play in strengthening democracy by informing citizens, holding public officials accountable and providing platforms for public discourse.
“Dotun Oladipo’s death at the age of 56 is a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and to our nation,” Tinubu said.
The President added that Oladipo’s contributions to political journalism and the digital media space would not be forgotten.
Tinubu extended his condolences to Oladipo’s family, colleagues at GOCOP and friends, while praying for the repose of his soul and strength for those he left behind.
Sanwo-Olu: His Death Is Shocking and Painful
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also expressed sadness over the journalist’s sudden passing.
Sanwo-Olu described Oladipo as one of Nigeria’s prolific journalists, writers and media entrepreneurs, noting his significant contribution to journalism and the development of online publishing.
The governor recalled his encounters with Oladipo during media engagements and described him as brilliant, calm and professional.
Sanwo-Olu said the late publisher touched many lives through his profession and described his death as shocking and painful.
“Dotun’s sudden death is shocking and painful,” the governor said, while extending his condolences, on behalf of his family and the Lagos State Government, to the Oladipo family and the wider media community.
Nigerian Guild of Editors Pays Tribute
The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) described Oladipo as a gentleman and great journalist whose career was defined by professionalism, courage, intellectual depth and commitment to journalism and nation-building.
The guild expressed profound sadness over the death of the former newspaper editor and publisher, noting that his contribution to the Nigerian media industry would be remembered.
IPI Nigeria: We Have Lost a Dependable Colleague
The Nigerian chapter of the International Press Institute (IPI) described Oladipo as an accomplished journalist, publisher and entrepreneur who remained committed to press freedom.
IPI Nigeria President Musikilu Mojeed said Oladipo was dependable, resourceful and deeply committed to professional journalism.
The organisation noted that Oladipo served as chairman of its Programmes Committee and remained actively involved in its activities despite the demands of running The Eagle Online.
IPI said his death represented a profound loss not only to his family and colleagues but also to the wider media community and the struggle for press freedom and professional journalism.
GOCOP: His Contribution Will Always Be Remembered
The Guild of Corporate Online Publishers also mourned its former president.
GOCOP President Danlami Nmodu said Oladipo played an important role in the development of the guild, particularly during its formative years when online publishing was still establishing itself as a major part of Nigeria’s media industry.
Nmodu described Oladipo as a journalist who understood both journalism and the business of publishing.
He said the late publisher was passionate about online media and gave his time to the growth of GOCOP.
“His contribution will always be remembered,” Nmodu said.
Former Army Spokesperson Remembers a Trusted Friend
Retired Brigadier-General S.K. Usman, former Director of Army Public Relations, also paid tribute to Oladipo.
Usman described the deceased as a close friend, dependable professional and trusted colleague.
He recalled Oladipo as a man of wisdom, warmth and integrity who possessed a strong understanding of journalism, publishing and Nigeria’s evolving digital media landscape.
Usman said Oladipo was consistently supportive and professional during his tenure as Director of Army Public Relations and continued to be a trusted colleague after his retirement.
He said Oladipo’s passion for journalism, commitment to excellence and advocacy for a vibrant online media industry would be greatly missed.
NUJ Mourns Major Loss to Journalism
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, described Oladipo’s death as a major loss to the journalism profession.
The council described him as a committed journalist, media entrepreneur and respected colleague whose contribution to digital journalism would remain memorable.
According to the NUJ, Oladipo’s death has created a huge vacuum in Nigeria’s media space, while his legacy of courage, professionalism and service will continue to inspire younger journalists.
A Career That Spanned Traditional and Digital Journalism
Oladipo began his career when traditional newspapers dominated Nigeria’s media landscape.
He worked in various editorial capacities before becoming one of the journalists who successfully transitioned into digital publishing.
As publisher of The Eagle Online, he became part of a generation of Nigerian media entrepreneurs who helped shape the country’s rapidly expanding online news industry.
His leadership of GOCOP between 2017 and 2021 also came at a crucial period in the development of Nigeria’s digital media sector.
Beyond journalism, colleagues remembered him as a professional who built relationships across the media, political and public relations communities.
His death at 56 has therefore been widely described as not only a personal tragedy for his family but also a significant loss to Nigerian journalism.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
