ABUJA, NIGERIA: Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed that he expects to face serious political consequences if President Bola Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election to either former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or Labour Party’s Peter Obi.
Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has continued to openly support President Tinubu despite belonging to the opposition party.
Speaking during a media chat, the former Rivers State governor said he was fully aware of the possible consequences of his decision to back Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“I will be the first politician that I think they will come after. I will be the first politician. I know they will come for my head,” Wike said.
The FCT minister, however, maintained that the possibility of political retaliation would not change his position or his determination to support Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Wike said his focus was firmly on ensuring that Tinubu secures another term in office.
“Each day I sleep, I am thinking about the president’s reelection. When I am eating, I think about the president’s reelection. Everything I am doing now is about the president’s reelection,” he stated.
The former governor also spoke about the criticism he has received since publicly aligning himself with Tinubu.
According to Wike, the level of criticism and name-calling directed at him has been unprecedented, but he said he was not bothered by the opinions of his critics.
“I don’t see where anybody in this country today has been called names the way my name has been. I am not bothered about people who say their [own] thing. My business is, as I said, I am going to support Mr President,” he said.
Wike’s continued support for Tinubu has placed him in an unusual position within Nigerian politics, particularly as the 2027 presidential race begins to take shape.
His comments are likely to generate further debate over the political alliances, rivalries and possible consequences that could emerge from the outcome of the 2027 election.
