Olu Jacobs Dies at 84: Nollywood Loses Legendary Actor
Veteran Nollywood actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
Lagos, Nigeria –Nollywood has lost one of its most respected veteran actors, Olu Jacobs, who died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the age of 84.
His death was announced by his family through a statement shared on social media by his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and son, Olusoji Jacobs.
The family described the late actor as “The Lion of Lufodo” and announced that he died on September 16, 2026.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo.”
The statement identified him as Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs (MFR) and gave his dates as July 11, 1942 – September 16, 2026.
The family also appealed to the public, particularly bloggers and social media influencers, to respect their privacy as they mourn the veteran actor.
Olu Jacobs was one of the most recognisable faces in Nigerian theatre, television and film. His career spanned several decades, beginning with professional theatre and television work in the United Kingdom before he became a major figure in Nigeria’s film industry.
He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and appeared in a number of British television productions and international films before establishing himself as one of Nollywood’s leading actors.
Over the course of his career, Jacobs appeared in numerous Nigerian films and became known for his commanding screen presence, distinctive voice and versatility as an actor.
Beyond acting, he was also a film executive and, together with Joke Silva, was associated with the Lufodo Group, which contributed to the development of Nigeria’s performing arts and film industry.
Jacobs was also recognised with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) for his contribution to the country.
His death comes after years of recurring false reports about his passing. In previous instances, his family had publicly dismissed such reports. This time, however, the announcement has come directly from the family and has been reported by major Nigerian news organisations.
The death of Olu Jacobs marks the passing of one of the generation of actors whose work helped shape Nigerian theatre, television and the modern Nollywood industry.
He is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, and their family.
