The Delta State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on illegal roadblocks and unauthorised revenue collection, arresting nine suspects during enforcement operations carried out across major highways in the State.
The operation, which began on Friday, was launched to enforce the Federal Government’s directive against extortion and other criminal activities affecting motorists and commuters on Nigerian roads.
The suspects were arrested at strategic locations, including the Head Bridge axis on the Delta-Anambra boundary and the Benin-Asaba Expressway near Agbor, the police said.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to the statement, the operation targeted locations notorious for illegal toll collection and the erection of unauthorised roadblocks, which have disrupted free movement and exposed motorists to harassment.
“The Delta State Police Command has launched a statewide clampdown on illegal road blocks and unauthorised revenue collection along highways, in strict compliance with the Federal Government’s directive to rid Nigerian roads of extortion and criminal activities,” the statement read.
The Command added that the nine suspects were arrested during the operation at strategic locations, including the Head Bridge axis, which links Delta and Anambra States, and the Benin-Asaba Expressway by Agbor.
The police said all the suspects remained in custody and would be charged to court after the completion of investigations.
The Command also reaffirmed its commitment to restoring order and safety on highways across Delta State, warning that similar enforcement operations would be carried out in other parts of the State.
“The Delta State Police Command reiterates its commitment to restoring sanity and safety to highways across the State.
“Similar enforcement exercises will be replicated in other parts of Delta to ensure that motorists and commuters travel without harassment or illegal levies,” the statement added.
The police urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement officers as the ongoing enforcement operations continue.
