ABUJA, Nigeria: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to address Nigerians in a nationwide broadcast on October 1, 2026, as part of activities marking the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Federal Government has announced plans for a low-key celebration this year, with an Inter-Ministerial Committee established to coordinate activities for the anniversary.
The committee, chaired by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, was inaugurated on Thursday in Abuja.
According to the government, the anniversary will provide an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices and contributions of the country’s founding leaders and the journey since independence.
The government also plans to highlight some of the achievements of the Tinubu administration and ongoing reform efforts amid the economic and social challenges facing the country.
Programme Of Events
The official programme is expected to begin with a World Press Conference on September 24.
Other scheduled activities include a Juma’at Service on September 25, a Church Service on September 27 and an Independence Day Public Lecture on September 30.
The celebrations will culminate in President Tinubu’s nationwide broadcast to Nigerians on October 1.
The Federal Government has directed the committee to keep the anniversary activities low-key and work within the limited time available before Independence Day.
The President’s October 1 address is expected to form the central national message of this year’s Independence anniversary programme.
