The Benue State Government has declared the fee-free status for school pupils in all government-owned public schools, Basic One to Basic Nine.
On Friday, Gov Hyacinth Alia revealed this at the first-ever Benue Basic Education Summit taking place at the College of Health Sciences, Dr Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi.
According to him, it is part of his government’s commitment to ensuring no child of school age is disenfranchised from their education.
The decision will help the poor and vulnerable families while preparing the future generations of the state with a strong educational foundation, explained Gov Alia.
According to the governor, the state has already recruited over 9,700 teachers, regularly paid salaries and implemented the harmonised retirement age for teachers, among other steps in the education sector.
The future of the state lies in the children. According to Abiodun, investing in children will guarantee the future of the state. He urged parents, traditional rulers, religious leaders and others to assist in the enforcement of compulsory basic education.
In a reactive measure aimed at tackling the problem of out-of-school children, the governor has also launched a new initiative dubbed Building Rights to Access and Compulsory Education for Un-enrolled Pupils (BRACE-UP).
As spoken by him, the project will see community leaders, parents and teachers name out-of-school children, create flexible learning pathways, and track pupils from enrolment to completion.
