Abimbola Onabanjo, a member of the Fusengbuwa Royal House, is asking people to stop calling him Awujale of Ijebuland because there have been rumours about him possibly becoming the next one.
On Saturday, Onabanjo issued a statement stating that selecting the Awujale is a significant event with deep roots in tradition. He said he appreciates all the support he’s received.
I’m really thankful for all the love, said Onabanjo, the 45-year-old Ijebu prince, who knows how important this is. The throne has been vacant since Oba Sikiru Adetona died on July 13, 2023, at the age of 91.
Onabanjo is grateful that people think he’s a good fit for the job, but he wants everyone to take a breath. The town chooses the king, as they say. I appreciate your confidence, but we need to respect the process of picking the Awujale, he stated.
He’s also requesting that people not call him Awujale or share posts that act like he’s already won. Let’s protect Ijebu traditions, and I’m asking for your help in letting things run correctly, Onabanjo said.
Onabanjo is dedicated to Ijebuland’s values and culture. He told his supporters that he respects the traditions. I appreciate your backing. I promise that my main aim is to support tradition and peace in Ijebuland, he said.
He’s the grandson of Olabisi Onabanjo, who used to be the Governor of Ogun State. He’s known as a businessman who donates to charity, which is something that helps him, as people encourage him to get the throne.
