NASARAWA, NIGERIA — A former Governor of Nasarawa State, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, has declared his support for the governorship ambition of former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries in the state.
Al-Makura made his position known during a recent visit to the palace of the Emir of Lafia, where Adamu concluded his consultations with traditional rulers across Nasarawa State.
The former governor explained that his endorsement was based on Adamu’s experience in public service and his perceived ability to provide effective leadership if elected as governor.
Despite publicly backing Adamu, Al-Makura emphasized that the party would adopt a transparent selection process. He noted that the APC in Nasarawa would conduct direct primaries, allowing all registered party members to participate in choosing the governorship candidate.
According to him, the process would not favour any individual through consensus or automatic endorsement, stressing that the decision must ultimately rest with party members.
On his part, Adamu said his consultations across the state were aimed at engaging critical stakeholders and seeking their support ahead of the primaries. He added that his return to Lafia was to receive royal blessings and guidance from the Emir.
The former police chief also pledged to run a peaceful campaign, assuring party members and residents of his commitment to law and order throughout the political process.
The upcoming APC governorship primaries in Nasarawa State are expected to attract significant attention, as multiple aspirants jostle for the party’s ticket. Political observers say Al-Makura’s endorsement could influence the dynamics of the race, given his longstanding role in the state’s political structure.
However, with the adoption of direct primaries, the final outcome will depend largely on the decision of party members across the state.
