The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman and other officers implicated in the killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.
The fatal shooting, which occurred on April 26, 2026, triggered public outrage and reignited concerns over police conduct and excessive use of force.
Ogidi was reportedly shot during an encounter with police officers under circumstances the authorities later described as “unlawful” and a clear violation of established policing standards.
Following the incident, the Nigeria Police Force launched an internal probe into the actions of the officers involved. Findings revealed serious breaches of professional conduct, including violations of rules governing the use of firearms.
Acting on the recommendations of its disciplinary panel, IGP Disu approved the dismissal of ASP Usman and the other implicated officers, pending final administrative procedures. He also directed that they be handed over for criminal prosecution.
In a statement, Disu condemned the killing as “unlawful, unprofessional, and unacceptable,” stressing that officers of the Force have a constitutional duty to protect lives and must be held accountable when they act outside the law.
