INEC Releases Date for 2027 Presidential Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed January 16, 2027, as the new date for the presidential and national assembly elections.

The commission also fixed February 6, 2027, as the date for the governorship and state houses of assembly elections.

Mohammed Haruna, who serves as the national commissioner and chairman of the information and voter education committee, delivered a significant announcement regarding the updated election timetable in a statement released on Thursday.

Originally, the electoral body had set the date for the presidential and national assembly elections to take place on February 20, 2027. Following that, the governorship elections and those for the state houses of assembly were planned for March 6, 2027. However, these dates have now been revised. The decision to modify the election schedule stems from the recent repeal of the Electoral Act of 2022, which has been replaced by the newly enacted Electoral Act of 2026. This legislative change necessitated a reassessment of the electoral timeline to ensure compliance with the new legal framework governing the electoral process.
