Lagos commuters are set to enjoy faster and more convenient rail services as the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) rolls out an expanded timetable for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line.
In a move aimed at easing travel across the State, the transport authority has increased daily train operations from 90 to 94 trips and shifted the start time for weekday and Saturday services from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, through a statement shared on his official X account.
According to the statement, the revised schedule will take effect on June 15, 2026, and is designed to improve passenger experience, cut waiting times and cater to the growing number of residents who depend on the rail system for daily transportation.
“LAMATA has announced a major enhancement to the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line service, increasing daily train operations from 90 to 94 trips and shifting the start of weekday and Saturday services to 6:00 a.m. from the previous 6:30 a.m.,” the statement said.
The authority explained that the earlier departure time would allow commuters to begin their journeys ahead of peak-hour traffic, making travel more efficient.
“Under the new schedule, trains will begin operations 30 minutes earlier from Monday to Saturday, enabling thousands of commuters to start their journeys ahead of peak road traffic,” LAMATA stated.
While services will continue to end at 9:30 p.m., the increase in daily trips is expected to reduce congestion at stations and improve overall travel efficiency along the corridor.
LAMATA also announced an improvement to Sunday operations, with train trips increasing from 22 to 24. Trains will run at regular 30-minute intervals throughout the day, providing passengers with a more predictable service.
The authority attributed the expansion to rising demand for the Blue Line, which has continued to attract more passengers since commercial operations began on September 4, 2023.
“The latest upgrade reflects the growing popularity of the Blue Line since passenger operations commenced on September 4, 2023,” the statement noted.
Highlighting the impact of the rail network on urban transportation, LAMATA revealed that more than six million passengers have used the Blue Line since its launch.
“Since launch, the rail system has transported more than six million passengers, underscoring its critical role in transforming urban mobility and reducing travel times across the city,” the authority added.
The latest enhancement forms part of the Lagos State Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen mass transit infrastructure and provide residents with reliable alternatives as demand for rail transportation continues to grow.
