Lent and Ramadan Start Today, Millions Begin Season of Fasting and Prayer

Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, who leads the National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), let everyone know that the Ramadan moon has been spotted, meaning Ramadan will start soon.

Sambo Junaidu, who heads the Sultanate Council’s religious advisory group, put out a statement saying that the Sultan got reports from all over Nigeria about people seeing the moon. These reports were checked to make sure they were accurate.

Shehu Abubakar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi, the Shehu of Borno, spoke for the Sultan, saying that Muslims in Nigeria will start fasting for Ramadan today.

The statement also mentioned that, after checking the reports from different places, the Sultanate Council agrees that the new moon has been sighted. So, Wednesday, February 18, 2026, will be the first day of Ramadan in the year 1447 AH.

Also, today is Ash Wednesday, which means it’s the start of Lent for Christians.
