ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has released an updated step-by-step guide to help Nigerians living abroad renew their international passports through its Contactless Passport Application System.
The initiative is designed to make passport renewal more convenient by allowing eligible Nigerians in the diaspora to complete most of the application process remotely using the official NIS mobile application, reducing the need for physical visits to Nigerian embassies and high commissions.
According to the NIS, eligible applicants can renew their passports by following these steps:
- Download the official NIS Mobile App from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Create an account using a valid email address and verify the account.
- Log in and select the Passport Application Services option.
- Choose the Contactless (Self-Enrolment) passport renewal option.
- Complete the online application form and verify your National Identification Number (NIN), where applicable.
- Upload the required documents and passport photograph.
- Pay the prescribed passport renewal fee through the approved online payment platform.
- Complete the biometric self-enrolment process using the mobile application.
- Review all submitted information carefully before final submission.
- Track the application’s progress in the app until the new passport is processed and delivered, in accordance with the available delivery arrangements in the applicant’s country of residence.
The Immigration Service noted that applicants should ensure they meet the eligibility requirements before using the contactless platform, as certain application categories may still require an in-person visit to a Nigerian mission for verification or additional processing.
The NIS also advised applicants experiencing payment issues or delays in receiving one-time passwords (OTPs) to check their spam or junk email folders and ensure they are using the latest version of the mobile application. The Service said it has upgraded its payment gateway and continues to improve the platform following feedback from Nigerians abroad.
The Contactless Passport Application System forms part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to modernise passport administration, improve service delivery, and provide Nigerians in the diaspora with faster, more efficient access to passport renewal services without unnecessary travel or long waiting times.
